Iowa Insurance CE Guidelines

  • The license term is the last day of the Producer’s birth month in the renewal year.
  • 36hrs. of CE (including 3hrs. of ethics) are required every 3yr. license term.
  • At least 18hrs must be completed in a classroom or classroom equivalent courses.
  • Minimum 18hrs. CE must be completed in  classroom or classroom equivalent courses.
  • Licensees may complete their CE requirement by taking courses approved for any line of authority.
 

Students are required to read and complete all study materials PRIOR to attempting the final exam.

  • Final exams are closed book. The use of notes, books or any outside assistance is forbidden.

  • Exams must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party “Proctor”. Proctors must be  minimum of 18yrs old and can be any person with NO family relation or financial interest in the success of the student completing the exam. 

  • Final exams must be completed with a passing score of 70% or above to earn course credit.

Initial NFIP Flood Training Requirement:

  • 3hrs. of initial training must be completed prior to selling or soliciting flood insurance products

Initial Annuity Training Requirement:

  • One-time 4hr. training must be completed prior to selling/soliciting annuity products.

Initial Long-Term Care Training Requirement:

  • 8hrs. initial (classroom or classroom equivalent) training must be completed prior to selling/solicitating Long-Term Care products.

Frequency of Long-Term Care Training:

  • Beginning 1/1/21 Producers who sell annuity products must complete a new annuity course that includes the new Best Interest rules.
  • Producers who have already completed a 4-hour annuity course prior to 1/1/2021 may complete a 1hr annuity best interest course or complete the new 4-hour annuity best interest course.
  • Producers who have not completed a 4hr annuity course must take the annuity best interests course prior to selling annuities.
  • Repetition Rules
    • Courses may NOT be repeated within a 3yr license term.
  • Carryover Rules
    • Excess CE hours may not be carried over to the next  license term.

Upon successful completion of a course, AHI will provide students with a printable Certificate of Completion which should be retained by the Producer in their personal files.

AHI will report course completions directly to your state recording entity, based on individual state requirements. 

Courses are licensed to be presented online, in classroom, classroom equivilant or by paper based self-study.

The following are exempt from Iowa Insurance CE requirements:

  • A producer who is an attorney licensed to sell insurance. The producer/attorney must file a report showing proof of compliance with the continuing legal education requirement for the attorney’s home state and pay the CE fee and the renewal fee.
  • Attorneys who do not have a CE requirement in their home states must comply with the Iowa insurance CE requirements.
  • A producer who is on extended active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • A non-resident producer who lives in a state where CE is required. These producers must file the renewal notice through the NIPR gateway.
  • A producer who is licensed for credit or surety. The producer must file the renewal report and pay the renewal fee.
