Rhode Island Insurance CE Guidelines

  • The license term is every 2 years on the last day of the Producers birth month.
  • Producers must complete 24hrs. of Insurance CE (including 3hrs. of ethics training) every 2yr. license term.
  • Producers may only  complete courses approved for the line of insurance they are licensed to sell.

Students are required to read and complete all study materials PRIOR to attempting the final exam.

  • Final exams are open-book. Producers may refer to course materials and notes as often as needed.
  • Exams do not require monitoring by a disinterested 3rd party “Proctor”. 
  • Final exams must be completed with a passing score of 70% or above to earn course credit.

Initial NFIP Flood Training Requirement:

  • 3hrs. of initial training must be completed prior to selling or soliciting flood insurance products

Initial Annuity Training Requirement:

  • One-time 4hr. training must be completed prior to selling/soliciting annuity products.
  • Effective April 2nd, 2021, Producers who sell annuity products will need to complete a new annuity course that includes the new Best Interest rules.
    • Producers who have already completed a 4-hour annuity course prior to 1/1/2021 may complete a 1-hour annuity best interest course or complete the new 4-hour annuity best interest course.
    • Producers who have not completed a 4-hour annuity course must take the annuity best interests course prior to selling annuities.
    Producers can take the annuity best interest courses before the effective date of this regulation.

Initial Long-Term Care Training Requirement:

  • 8hrs. initial training must be completed prior to selling/solicitating Long-Term Care products.

Frequency of Long-Term Care Training:

  • Additional 4hrs. LTC training must be completed every 2yr license term following completion of initial requirement.
  • Repetition Rules
    • Courses may NOT be repeated within a 2yr license term.
  • Carryover Rules
    • Maximum 12hrs. of excess CE may be carried over to the next 2yr license term.
    • Any excess Ethics hours will be carried over as “general” hours.

Upon successful completion of a course, AHI will provide students with a printable Certificate of Completion which should be retained by the Producer in their personal files.

AHI will report course completions directly to your state recording entity, based on individual state requirements. 

Courses are licensed to be presented online or by paper based self-study.

The following are exempt from Rhode Island Insurance CE requirements:

  • Residents holding licenses for which a licensing examination is not required.
  • Limited line credit insurance licensees
  • Adjusters and appraisers
  • Nonresident licensees who meet the CE requirements established by the insurance department in their home state if the home state is reciprocal with the State of Rhode Island. Nonresident producers are not exempt from the NAIC LTC training requirement. See “Nonresident CE Requirements” above for further information.
  • Individuals who are at least 55 years old at the time of renewal and have been licensed continuously for 25 years without lapse.
  • Individuals who are at least 60 years old by July 3, 2004 and have been licensed continuously for at least 20 years without lapse at the time of renewal.
